Jackie led the league in stolen bases, helped Brooklyn's Dodgers into first place by batting .312. No. 2, the Cleveland Indians' Larry Doby, had not looked as good. In his first two weeks in the majors he had appeared mostly as a pinch-hitter, batted only .167.
