In California, where anything can happen, Orson Welles—who has impersonated William Randolph Hearst, campaigned with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and sawed his wife in half—thought of running for the U.S. Senate.

There were other big-name possibilities for the Democratic ticket. An early effort to get Jimmy Roosevelt to run for Governor failed, but Jimmy would keep his hand in as a member of the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee.
