Canada: QUEBEC: Old Man's Game

The doctors looked hard at two entrants in the tough Dominion ski championship in Quebec last week. They thought that Laurie Huukie, 42, of Sudbury, Ont., a Finnish immigrant who spoke no English or French, was too old for the grueling, 13-mile course, especially as he had high blood pressure. Montreal's Gault Gillespie, 33, was ill with a cold and had a temperature. Only after the two men signed certificates assuming full responsibility in case of collapse would the doctors let them start with the 29 youngsters in the race.

One hour and 45 minutes later, the race was over....
