NEW YORK: Mugging

So dark is Manhattan's once-Great White Way that 207 actors and actresses (including Fredric March, Helen Hayes, Tallulah Bankhead) last week penned a frightened petition to Actors' Equity, deplored ". . . a wave of crime known as 'muggings,' " asked for police protection. The petition complained: "[Mugging] is not only affecting the safety of the citizen, but constitutes a serious threat to the theatrical business."
