FREE FRANCE: Aid, Not Recognition

In spite of General Charles de Gaulle's strong bid for the leadership of French democracy (TIME, July 6), neither the U.S. nor Great Britain is likely, officially, to recognize General de Gaulle's Free French Government. Chief reason: they would be vulnerable to the charge, by Frenchmen inside France, of setting up a puppet government on foreign soil. What General de Gaulle will get is military aid, with unofficial blessing.
