On the eastern front some 140 German divisions bided their time. Wehrmacht leaders, hungry for reinforcements in the west (where perhaps 70 divisions faced the Americans, British and French), still dared not borrow from the east. Like everyone else, they could read the signs, and the conclusion was inevitable: a Russian offensive would begin in a matter of weeks.
