Lynwood Thomas ("Schoolboy") Rowe, 51, an affable giant (6 ft. 4 in., 210 Ibs.) from Waco, Texas who was a high school star at golf, tennis, track-and-field and football before be coming an ace righthander for the Detroit Tigers from 1933 to 1942, relied on assorted amulets, including a broken jade elephant and a high-hopping spitball, during a spectacular 1934 season in which he won 24 games, 16 consecutively; of a heart attack; in El Dorado, Ark.
