¶The season for movie awards blossomed like a turn-of-the-year perennial when the New York Film Critics agreed with the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures in naming Marty the best movie of the year. Other choices by the critics: best actor, Ernest Borgnine in Marty; best actress, Anna Magnani in The Rose Tattoo; best director, David Lean for Summertime; best foreign-language film, a tie between Italy's Umberto D. and France's Diabolique.
