¶After completing a survey of 199 communities, the New York State Citizens Committee for the Public Schools told of some of the attitudes that today's teachers must struggle against. Four out of ten children and nearly half the parents polled said they have no respect for their teachers' knowledge. Only 24% of the adults said they admire teachers. In 79 communities, more than half the male teachers hold down after-hours jobs to make ends meet.
