Australia's Ashley Cooper, 21, shrugged off an ankle injury in the last set to defeat 23-year-old Aussie Mai Anderson (6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 10-8, 8-6), defending champion, in the national men's championship; for the first time in the 78-year history of the tournament no American even reached the semifinals.
