The romance of Leland Cummings Jr. and Mary Louise Werner roused Protestant and Catholic tempers last year. When the pair decided to get married, Leland's Roman Catholic parents sued Mary's Lutheran parents for $500,000 for enticing Leland away from his church with a $75-a-month allowance and the promise of a $25,000 job in Mr. Werner's ironworks in Milwaukee (TIME, July 1).
