¶ A New Orleans committee of physicians and chemists found no proof that fluoridation of the city's water could do any harm, but came out against fluoridation nevertheless—at least for the present. Said famed Surgeon Alton Ochsner, a member of the committee: "I think there is very definite evidence that fluoridation is probably harmful in that it produces periodontoclasia" (disease of the gums and jawbones).
