¶ The Hoover Commission, instead of trying to save the Government money, denounced Secretary Hobby's Department of Health, Education and Welfare for not having spent enough—on research. Specific target: $7,400,000 needed by the National Institutes of Health for a backlog of 723 research projects on topics ranging from mental health to photosynthesis.

¶ Rheumatoid arthritis is not only a disease of the joints, researchers reported to the American Rheumatism Association: a victim is likely to develop also rheumatoid heart disease and a disorder of the blood vessels, especially in the legs.
