The 40 Lenten days that began March 3 and will end at Eastertide* have been for Christians a time for prayer and devotion, and for all men a time of urgency and stress. History, poised between Ivy and Jughead, between the 38th parallel and Dienbienphu, has enforced a Lenten mood upon the nations with the sack cloth of political conflict and showers of radioactive ash.
