Education: Report Card

¶ In the Chattanooga Times, Harry Carter, executive assistant to Tennessee's education commissioner, reeled off a startling statistic. Of the state's Negro high-school graduates, 34% go on to college. The whites' record: 30%.

¶After winning back their posts by order of the state supreme court, 22 of the facultymen dismissed for refusing to sign the University of California's now-invalid loyalty oath found that they would probably have to go to court again. Reason: by a vote of 14-6, the Regents refused to pay their salaries for the 2½-year period they were out of a job.
