TIME: T.S. (for Thomas Stanley) Matthews, 52, who joined the editorial staff in 1929 as a book reviewer. Quickly advancing to Books editor, Matthews became a general editor in 1937 and was appointed managing editor in 1943. In a decade of great expansion, during which TIME'S circulation doubled, he established higher standards of good reporting, good thinking, good writing.
