The Press: Why Bertie Hates Them

As an Anglophobe, the Chicago Tribune's Colonel Robert R. McCormick beats them all. In a letter published in a new British monthly, For Editors Only, last week Bertie McCormick candidly admitted that he hates the English, and tried to tell why. Wrote Bertie: "My hatred for the English originated with the British Foreign Office, who wish to set down my just criticism to prejudice. Among the criticisms are:

"Dunkirk was a rout and not a victory.

"The surrender of Hong Kong and Singapore were disgraces for which the generals should have been shot.

"Americans, Australians, and the English admiral were responsible for the Savo...
