The Chicago Tribune, which has been campaigning against grafting policemen, also runs Comic-Strip Detective Dick Tracy. Therefore, when Tracy moved into a palatial home, Trib Reader William J. O'Neil asked an obvious question: How could Tracy afford such a fine house on a detective's pay? Wrote Reader O'Neil: "The Tribune having been a stalwart defender of 'clean government' ... we feel sure that you will launch an immediate investigation of this matter." The Tribune's only comment was an enigmatic headline over the letter: HE BUILT IT OUT OF HIS REWARDS.
