AUSTRIA: New President

Some 4,365,000 Austrians voted this week for a new President to succeed the late Dr. Karl Renner. Their choice: General Theodor Koerner, a spade-bearded septuagenarian (78), who was born an aristocrat and served as an officer in the imperial army, but long ago dropped the von from his name, turned Socialist, and after World War II became mayor of Vienna.
