¶ U.S. Davis Cup tennis players, in the interzone final with Sweden at Brisbane, Australia, handily won all five matches (four singles, one doubles), earned the right to play Australia for the cup next week. In a remarkable singles match with Sven Davidson, young Ham Richardson beat the able Swede by 6-0, 6-3, 6-3.

¶ As the National League's Most Valuable Player of 1954, baseball writers picked Willie Mays, the World Champion New York Giants' sensational centerfielder. Earlier the American League M.V.P. title went to the second-place Yankees' catcher, Lawrence ("Yogi") Berra.
