Foreign News: The Answer

In stiff diplomatic notes the U.S., Britain and France had demanded that Moscow disband Eastern Germany's "People's Police," which is armed with howitzers, antiaircraft guns and tanks, generally has "the character of an army" (TIME, June 12). Last week the Western Allies got their answer. Eastern Germany's Communist puppet government announced that it would add a new branch to its treaty-violating military force: a "People's Navy Police." The Red mariners, said the announcement, will have the task of protecting fishing fleets, fighting smugglers along Germany's Baltic coast, and safeguarding "democratic achievements."
