On its Sunday-magazine cover, the Chicago Tribune headlined: I WAS A DOPE ADDICT. It was the first of five chapters telling the sad story of pretty Peggy Ellsworth, 1947's "Miss Michigan," as told to Norma Lee Browning. Trib readers were accustomed to sad stories being told to Reporter Browning. As the Trib's star sob sister, she had masqueraded as a wayward girl, stranded in the city with no money (to measure the size of Chicago's heart), and submitted to phony medical treatment to expose quacks.
