Art: But Not the Crown

Since V-E day, U.S. authorities in Germany have rounded up 700,000 stolen works of art and returned them to the countries they came from, said the State Department last week. Not included: Hungary's historic crown of St. Stephen, one of the items demanded by Hungarian Reds as ransom for the release of U.S. Businessman Robert Vogeler (TIME, April 30). State's reason for hanging on to the crown, in stiffest diplomatese: the U.S. "does not regard the present juncture as opportune or appropriate."
