National Affairs: The Bottom Third

Prosperous as the nation was in bountiful 1948, many were left behind. More than 8,000,000 families and individuals had 1948 incomes of less than $1,000 cash a year, a congressional subcommittee reported last week, and almost a third of the nation had less than $2,000 a year to live on.
