Whither had the captains departed? Where were the generals and admirals whom war had made famous?
Some of the most famous had withdrawn into the wingsto let younger men take over, or simply to rest. The A.A.F.'s General of the Army "Hap" Arnold was content to putter around his Sonoma (Calif.) ranch, contribute an occasional folksy column to the local paper. Effervescent Admiral "Bull" Halsey, another five-star officer, was less satisfied. He had hoped for a job in private industry, but the President disliked the idea of his elder military statesmen...
