A sweeping majority of the nation seemed to agree on the cardinal issue of U.S. policy toward Russia. A Gallup poll reported last week that 19% of the people approved a continuation of Jimmy Byrnes's firmness-with-patience approach to Russia, but that an additional 51% hoped that Secretary Marshall would be even firmer. Only 5% wanted softer tactics.
