The Press: When Is News?

What is news? What just happened. And what happened? It's sometimes hard to see, harder to say. Sample (from the New York Times's front-page world news summary, one morning last week):

¶ "Mr. Bevin indicated rejection of the . . . report. . . .

¶ "Senate and House conferees were said to have made some progress. . . .

¶ "President Murray . . . was reported attempting to win consent. . . .

¶ "Surrender . . . will be urged. . . .

¶ " [Hungary's Premier] said . . . he favored . . . something Russia has...
