Americans are drinking more fresh milk than ever before. Demand is up 10 to 15% over last year. Production (in the first four months) is up a mere one-half of 1%. Evaporated and condensed milk production is down 28%, dried milk down 11%. Yet Lend-Lease will take a bigger chunk of these products than ever before.
These grim figures last week caused OPA to ration all canned milk. But this was only a stopgap; from the Department of Agriculture came ominous news: the U.S. may have its fresh milk rationed before year's end.
