At Camp Shelby, Miss., the U.S. Army inducted in a body a twelve-piece Negro "sweet-swing" band from Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. Its members had volunteered to play as a regimental band. Said Band Director Frank M. Christmas (on leave of absence as Alcorn's dean of men): "The people of Mississippi have given us an education, and we want to do something in return."
