RETAIL TRADE: Record November

This year U.S. shoppers took the advice of the department stores to "Buy in November." Last week's Federal Reserve Board figures on retail sales showed that department store sales for the third week in November hit 201% of the 1935-39 average, a new high for November that was 21% above the same week in 1942. But they were still 50% below the last-gasp, before-Christmas rush a year ago.
