The Army went out of its way last week to spike grisly rumors that fantastic numbers of U.S. soldiers have been dreadfully maimed. Brig. General Fred W. Rankin, chief consultant in surgery, reported: 1,194 soldiers have had limbs amputated;* 68 of these have lost two limbs. Rankin added, "There was not a single triple amputation nor was there a single quadruple, or so-called 'basket type' of case."
