Twenty million tons of iron and steel rust out of use each year. Electrolytic iron resists corrosion, but is difficult to make. Chromium alloyed with iron makes "rustless iron." "Stainless" steel contains iron, carbon and chromium. But for a multitude of uses a coating over the iron or steel objects suffices.
