Education: New President

The University of North Carolina's trustees, last week, took four ballots to elect Frank Porter Graham, faculty member since 1914, to succeed Henry Woodburn Chase, new president of the University of Illinois (TIME, March 3). A famed North Carolina Liberal, history-teaching President Graham was chosen through the influence of younger alumni although he insisted he did not want the office.
