Despite recent Republican incursions, the major ballot battles in Texas are between the Democrats' liberal and conservative wings. Conservatives usually win. Incumbent Governor John Connally is one, although the popular idiom lately is "moderate conservative," to differentiate most Democrats from H. L. Hunt.
