Coming in for a landing at a little Mekong Delta town, the lumbering, freight-laden C-47 was a perfect target. The Viet Cong did not miss, putting bullets through the shoulder, leg and arm of the pilot of the Air America civilian transport ferrying rice under contract to the U.S. Government. As the crippled plane headed down to a crash landing in a small canal, the copilot frantically radioed for a rescue helicopter.
