Gordon Persons, 63, reform-minded Alabama Governor from 1951 to 1955, who in July 1954 put notorious Phenix City under martial rule after his candidate for attorney general, Albert Patterson, was murdered for pledging to stamp out vice, spent the rest of his term cleaning up the town; of a heart attack; in Montgomery, Ala.
