SOUTH DAKOTA'S Karl Mundt, ranking Republican on the Senate Government Operations subcommittee, told newsmen that the committee would investigate any "personal financial interest" that "people at the Pentagon" might have had in the award of the TFX contract. Mundt specifically excluded Defense Secretary McNamara, later explained: "Everyone knows about McNamara. He's lived in a goldfish bowl ever since he took office. No one questions his self-interest in this matter." But no matter, McNamara took Mundt's comments as an imputation against his honesty, insisted on giving the subcommittee a statement of his financial holdings and those of his wife.
