On June 6, 1944, vast fleets of Allied bombers blasted the north coast of France; the mightiest armada the world had ever seen, 5,000 transport vessels and fighting ships, churned up to the coast of Normandy; 150,000 Allied soldiers smashed ashore at five points under withering fire from the Wehrmacht; 10,000 Allied fighting men and perhaps half that many Germans were killed or wounded; and the outcome of the greatest war in history was unalterably determined.
