Ugliest aspect of the ugly war in Algeria has been the persistent reports of torture practiced in France's detention camps in Algeria. Though prominent Frenchmen of all political persuasions have protested in shock and shame, French army zealots argue that "a few moments of discomfort are justifiable if they lead to a confession that saves many lives."
