While the House Un-American Activities Committee basked in the glow of the Supreme Court's decision, an even warmer endorsement came from the House itself.
California Democrat James Roosevelt, who for years has grandstanded in his fight to abolish the committee, made his annual effort to slice its appropriations request-this year $331,000. the third highest of any House committee. Jimmy Roosevelt got scant help from fellow liberals, who complain in private about committee methods but seldom vote their feelings; by an overwhelming 412-to-6 majority, the House approved the largest sum the committee has ever received.
