BRITISH WEST INDIES: Federation's Home

The commission appointed by the Colonial Office to suggest a capital for the new British Caribbean Federation announced its decision last week. The winner: Barbados, with Jamaica and Trinidad as second and third alternates.

In making its decision, the commission quickly passed over the small and scattered islands of the Leeward and Windward groups (see map). Then it thumbed down Trinidad because of "widespread reports of corruption," and Jamaica because it is by far the largest and most prosperous of all the island colonies and might tend to dominate the rest.
