With none of the usual gaseous explosions,
gothic orations or protracted strikes, the soft-coal operators and John
L. Lewis' United Mine Workers last week signed a new 14-month contract.
The miners got a 20¢-an-hour pay boost, and the operators got ready to
raise coal prices as much as 25¢ a ton at the pits.
