When they bought Vladimir Nabokov's bestselling novel Lolita (TIME, Sept. 1), Director Stanley Kubrick and Producer James B. Harris gambled $150,000 that they will find an answer. "Basically," said Kubrick, "this story is a very funny character relationship." Hollywood wags saw one solution: make the principals a few years older and cast Maurice Chevalier opposite Brigitte Bardot.
