National Affairs: Average Day

Every 15 seconds a major crime is committed somewhere in the U.S.—more than 2,000,000 last year. Reporting on what he called "this national disgrace" to the American Bar Association last week, Attorney General Brownell described "an average day" in crime: 20 murders or violent deaths, 47 rapes, 160 robberies, 240 aggravated assaults, 600 stolen cars, 1,200 burglaries, 3,300 larcenies and thefts.
