National Affairs: Bell Tolls

In two U.S. courtrooms, the bell of justice tolled for Communism:

¶ In New York, Federal Judge Sylvester Ryan gave a five-year prison sentence to lanky William Perl (TIME, June 1), 34-year-old jet-propulsion expert and onetime classmate (Manhattan's City College) of Atom Spies Julius Rosenberg and Morton Sobell. It was "abundantly established," said Judge Ryan, that Perl had deliberately lied when he told a federal grand jury that he did not know Rosenberg or Sobell.

¶ In Washington, Judge Holtzoff sentenced Kurt Ponger to five to 15 years in prison, and his brother-in-law Otto Verber...
