Reporters were called in last week by the Crowell-Collier Publishing Co. (Collier's, American, Woman's Home Companion) for an "important announcement." The news: beginning with the Aug. 7 issue, the company's 65-year-old weekly Collier's will become a fortnightly. The news was no surprise to newsmen, who have known for weeks that Crowell-Collier's was ready to try a drastic cure for its ailing weekly. At its peak in 1946, Collier's was a fat magazine that brought handsome profits to Crowell-Collier. But it began to sicken. It tried to jack up circulation with such thin stunts...
