A 107-car southbound Milwaukee Railroad freight carrying ammunition rolled into Lewis, Ind. (pop. 416) one night last week, jumped the track and blew up with a force felt for 35 miles. For four hours, 105-and 155-mm. howitzer shells lobbed into Lewis. When the siege ended, nine houses, four barns and two business buildings were destroyed, 54 of the remaining 95 houses were damaged. Only two residents, both over 80, were hurt seriously enough to be hospitalized; no one was killed. When the blast came, almost everyone in Lewis was out of range, at an Eastern Star meeting in Masonic Hall.
