Contributing mightily to the general excitement and confusion was the erratic behaviour of the Eisenhower train. At Saginaw, Ike had barely opened his mouth to say "Ladies & gentlemen . . ." when the engineer sent the Eisenhower train rolling inexorably away from the assembled crowd.
