Harry Vaughan, Harry Truman's foot-in-mouth military aide, did it again. At a dinner given by President Auriol, Vaughan leaned toward his dinner partner, a military aide to Auriol, confided with a smoking-car chuckle: "The only French I know is couchez avec moi." When the French aide gave him an icy stare, Vaughan said: "Well, that's about all the English you people would have known if a French army had ever come over here."
