THE NATIONS: SACEUR

"General Order 1. 2 April 1951. Allied Command Europe is activated at o001 hours this date pursuant to authority vested in me by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The undersigned hereby assumes command of Allied Command Europe, [signed] Dwight D. Eisenhower."

With this order, Ike Eisenhower this week took command of the intercontinental military coalition on which the free world's security depended. He also took on a new title: SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander, Europe).
